I have a soft spot when it comes to animals, and in the future, I want to help all the animals in need and hopefully receive my bachelor’s degree and successfully apply for a veterinary school in order to pursue my goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Researched Critical Analysis Essay

In today’s world, many teenagers have access to phones, tablets, and computers. The world is surrounded by vast amounts of technology and due to this reality, many children and adolescents have access to the internet and join social networking apps. Many people join social media apps to interact with their friends and family or view various types of content, however, many individuals utilize social media for malicious intentions. These dangers can affect younger kids’ well-being, this means social media can affect one’s state of mind and health negatively. Since there are dangers all over social media it is important to have measures to prevent any strike on their well-being. Therefore, authoritative figures such as parents and school staff should start making an effort in monitoring the children and adolescents’ activities on social media to prevent any future attacks on their well-being. When Parents make an effort in monitoring their children’s social media, the children will become more aware of the many risks present on social media and become responsible as they grow. There are methods in which parents can monitor their children and choose the most effective method to help their children stay safe on social media. (Padilla-Walker et al.,2020).

Parental monitoring is important because according to research, it is revealed that there are many risks in social media, for example, Haynes and Lyns (2015) research article goes into depth about the different risks that affect one’s well being. The research article by Zilka (2018)  on the perspective of children, adolescents, and young adults, we can gain insight into their usage, activities, sharing, and what they encounter on social media. In a research article by Beyars et al.(2020), he conducted a study that involved a school district and the effectiveness of school monitoring. The outcome of this study was positive and this proves that school monitoring was effective, which is why parents should become more involved with their children’s social media in order to prevent dangers to their well-being. All these studies reveal that parental monitoring as well as school monitoring are effective strategies that help prevent any potential risks to the children and adolescents’ wellbeing.

There are many risks present on social media that may cause consequences to one’s well-being. In a research article named “Defining user risks in social networking services” (Haynes & Lyn, 2020), the main purpose was to identify the risks faced by online social networking sites. These risks include cyberbullying, identity theft, ostracism, discrimination, and much more. With the number of risks present on Social media, there are also consequences that derived from these risks. According to Haynes and Lyn (2020), the consequences can vary from loss of self-esteem, loss of liberty, self-harm, and more. These consequences gravely affect one’s well being, with the dangers of social media, many younger children and adolescents who use it may experience the risk and cause changes in their mood or mentality.  Due to the many risks on social media, authoritative figures such as parents and schools must take action. This means that parents and schools should start monitoring the younger kids’ social media activities in order to prevent any major harm to their well-being.

Zilka (2018) is the author of this research article and in her study, she aimed to provide the perspective of the children, adolescents, and young adults and examine the participants’ usage habits, activities, sharing, and the hazards of social media. In this study, there were 551 participants including children, adolescents, and young adults. The participants completed questionnaires and answered questions such as “What do you like about social networking apps?” and “Do SNA help you solve problems in your everyday life?” The data showed that 41% of the participants experienced bullying, 40% experienced an invasion of privacy, and 22% were exposed to inappropriate content. In another similar study, it was revealed that out of the 238 participants 25.6% responded that they were bullied, 6.7% said they were sort of bullied and 67.6% responded that they were not bullied (Tzai-Pepelasi et al., 2017). This reveals that not everyone experiences cyberbullying, but there is still a high number of participants that experienced cyberbullying on social media. Even though 67.6% of the participants were not bullied, it is still important for parents to monitor their kids’ social media because you want them to become aware of the reality of social media. This gives evidence towards the statement that children, adolescents, and young adults are experiencing the dangers of social media, which is why parents and schools have to take action. Zilka (2018) believed that in order to “prevent the dangers inherent in social networking apps” there has to be an “external control”. This external can be parents or anyone present in the child’s life. She concluded that if external control was involved in the children’s social media, then it can prevent the child from experiencing some dangers on social media. Parental monitoring is an essential strategy in which parents can teach their children about the risks of SNA. Schools can also teach about this important topic in school and monitor their student’s activities. Once the child starts to become aware of the reality of social media, they will grow to become more responsible on social media apps.

Monitoring the children and adolescent’s social media activities will certainly have positive results. For example, Byars et al. (2020) conducted a study that involved a school district. The school district participated in a monitoring program in order to prevent youth suicide and school violence. This study conducted research that included a school district that included 17 schools. Out of 17 schools, 11 were elementary, 4 middle, and 2 high schools. We can infer that since more elementary schools were involved, there were more children and adolescents in the study. The school district reported that countless numbers of lives have been saved due to technology and social media monitoring. Byars et al. (2020) show an example of a suicide letter that one of the students wrote and due to the monitoring program, the school was able to stop the suicide attempt. The Study had a positive result which was the prevention of youth suicide. If the United States were to take up school monitoring programs, it will ultimately have a positive outcome. Many people will oppose the idea of the school monitoring the student’s social media activities. The main reason for this opposition is the issue of privacy and the idea that social media does not affect the well-being of everyone. There will always be parents and children who oppose the idea of school monitoring their social media and the main reason for this doubt is the issue of privacy and the idea that not everyone is affected by social media. However, there are already companies that monitor people on social media to gain insight into what people like and dislike. It is considered the “norm” (Byars et al., 2020) for these companies to surveil the people on social media apps.  This is not an issue of privacy but rather an issue of one’s well-being when going on social networking apps. Also, not everyone’s well-being will indeed be affected negatively when using social media because according to Beyens et al., (2020), those who used social media passively and the effects of it on their well-being differed from adolescent to adolescent. Therefore, not every child experiences the same, even though this is true, parental monitoring and school monitoring is mostly a strategy for prevention. Since the school monitoring programs had a positive result, it is important for parents to also become involved in the process of monitoring in order to protect their children’s well-being

When it comes to parental monitoring, many parents take on the role of active monitoring or restrictive monitoring. There are ways in which parental monitoring can be very effective for adolescents. It is known that many children and adolescents tend to be secretive and deceiving when it comes to talking about their privacy. This may be a difficult component that parents may face, however, there is an effective strategy in which parents can get through their kids. According to Padilla-Walker et al., (2020), the two main forms that a parent uses when trying to monitor their kids is restrictive and active parental monitoring. In active parental monitoring the parents make an effort to have a conversation with their children about certain topics about social media to help create critical thinking and help them become more aware of social media. While the restive parental method involves rules and limits that are set and limit the children’s social media use. According to the authors, the most effective method when educating children and adolescents is by using the active parental monitoring method. This is because this method is more instructive and discussion-based which will help guide the child to becoming aware of Social media dangers. Another way in which parents can monitor their children is to make their children their friends online. According to Mesch, (2018) he stated that the age group “ 50 to 64, 56% reported having a Facebook account.” This reveals that many parents have a social media account and if they decide to “friend” their children online, they will be able to keep an eye on their children’s posts and friends. The most effective way in which parents can monitor their children is to utilize the active parental monitoring method. With parental monitoring, it will be easier to prevent the children from experiencing many risks found on social media.

With the many risks on social media, parents and schools need to monitor the children and adolescent’s social media. This is because parents and schools are the most present in the child’s life and therefore they should take the initiative in the idea of monitoring the child’s social media. Even though there are adolescents that prefer not to share their privacy with their parents, there are ways in which parental monitoring is effective for the children and adolescents. Parental monitoring will ultimately help the children and adolescents to become aware of the dangers of social media and it would also build a good parent-child relationship. Therefore, parental monitoring and school monitoring are effective ways for preventing any hazards to the children and the adolescent’s well-being. In today’s present world, many younger generations utilize social media apps to view an abundance of content, as well as connect with friends and family members. With the amount of technology in this world many younger generations have access to technology, and therefore join social media because it’s the norm for many teens.

Summary Response #10

Before I started college, my writing was average, it was neither good nor bad. I knew what I had to write, and I was able to complete all my writing assignments and receive an average grade. At the start of my FIQWS 10108 class, I thought it was just going to be an ordinary English class where we write essays and read articles. As the semester went by, we read various chapters from the book “They say, I say” and I honestly gained a lot of useful information such as quotation sandwiches, how to introduce what others say, and how to introduce what I say, and many more templates. I will utilize all the information I gained from this class, to improve my writing in the future. We also read chapters of a book named “On writing well” by William Zinsser, one thing I learned from this book was to have confidence in my writing and to write for myself. The Diagnostic essay was the first essay I wrote for this class, and as I look back, I notice that my writing has improved since my first essay. From this class, I gained insightful information as well as tips and tricks to improve my writing.

INTRODUCTION
The article starts off with what they are researching. They are following the use of social networking applications by children. Adolescents, and young adults. The study is meant to show the participants point of view in utilizing social media.

This includes:
-Characteristics of SNA usage, -The e-safety of SNA, -The gender difference between age groups, -habits of use, -Hazards and solutions, -sharing with parents and parental control.

All of these categories will show the point of view of the children, adolescents, and young adults. As the article continues they focus on SNA and say that safety is a major issue and relates to a range of activities on social media. This includes online privacy, cyberbullying, exposure to violent content, and more. They also include the positive sides of SNA such as it is used for communicating with others and allow people to interact with strangers and friends.

They also mention that the number of children and youth utilizing social media is on the rise. They mention that more than 90% of American teenagers are on the internet.

METHOD
They used a mixed-methodology. They studied a sample of 551 participants from Israel. They mention that 71.1% were female and 28.9% were male. Since this data is mostly female participants the males point of view will be underrepresented. Out of the participants only 110 were interviewed in person. As for their data they created categories in which they came up with different questions. For example a category was “Habits of use and fulfillment” in this category they asked questions such as “What don’t you like about SNA?” and “IN how many groups do you participate in SNA?”

RESULTS
As for the results they made 5 charts. The first chart is about Extent of various activities in a course of a week. From the data it showed that the adolescents used SNA for about 11.06 hours a week while young adults came second and lastly children. This data also showed that in total the participants spend roughly the same time during phone calls and face to face meetings.

The 2nd chart showed the age group of face to face meetings and participation in SNA. The 3rd one the total of who the children and adolescents and young adults were talking too. The 4th showed the dark side of social media. It shows how each of the children, adolescents and young adults experienced bullying, Invasion of privacy, dispute and quarrels and much more. From this data it was concluded that there was a high percentage of bullying the tao being 41% in total. There was also a high percentage in privacy issues. The total being 40%. The 5th chart showed if they will let their parents look at their social media and the reasons they might. The conclusion was that children, adolescents, and young adults opposed the idea of being watched by their parents. They felt they were invading their privacy.

CONCLUSION
Finally the findings of this article was that the most significant dangers in social media networking apps was the invasion of privacy and bullying. The main problem is that shaming and bullying is happening through social media among friend groups, They mention that although this is a negative side to social media , they say it can also be positive because since the shaming and bullying was through social media they are able to find evidence of all of it and report it. They also mention that by increasing awareness of interpersonal relations can reduce future arguments and quarrels. They also mention that as age increases they grow to become more aware and responsible on social media. I believe that the parents should watch over mostly on children on social media. The parents have to educate their kids on the dangers such as bullying and privacy.

Persuasive Essay

In today’s present world we are surrounded by vast amounts of technology. This includes cell phones, computers, television, the internet, and much more. Due to our technological advances, people have developed apps such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Youtube, and many more to help interact with both friends and strangers and view distinct types of content. Many who use social media apps are the younger generation this includes millennials and generation z. Some Boomers use social media but not as much as the younger generations. Those on social media experience many positive outcomes such as talking to friends online and viewing other people’s content, however social media can be a dangerous platform for them because they may experience situations in which they are being bullied or talking to menacing people. Many Younger people such as millennials and generation Z who are on social media believe that they are safe and secure, and social media isn’t as dangerous as researchers say it is. I agree that most people who I know use social media do not experience any harmful comments or threats from the internet, however, I must agree with the author Gila Cohen Zilka that the main problem of social media is both bullying and the invasion of privacy. I believe that many younger generations utilize social media without realizing the hazards  it may cause to their wellbeing. Well being means being in a state of happiness, comfort, and healthy. Therefore authoritative figures such as parents and schools should start monitoring the kid’s social media to prevent any dangers to their well-being.

Gila Cohen Zilka is the author of the article “E-Safety in the use of social networking apps by children, adolescents, and young adults.”Zilka conducted a mixed-method study that aimed to show the perspective of children, adolescents, and young adults on their usage, habits, and activities on social networking apps. In her study, 551 participants from Israel were divided into three groups: children, adolescents, and young adults. The participants completed multiple questionnaires in which they were asked about their name, age, as well as open-ended questions such as “What do you like about social networking apps?” and “Do social networking apps create problems in your everyday life?.” With their results, Zilka created 5 tables and these tables revealed how much time the participants spend on certain activities as well as the hazards and solutions of social networking sites according to the participants.

In the end, her results stated that the participants who used social media in the study experienced bullying amongst their companions. Zilka stated that although social media brings upon opportunities it also creates a higher risk to the people’s well-being who use social media. She concluded that among the participants the problem was that many of them experienced shaming among friend groups. She stated that to combat this problem we as a society should put in the effort to resolve the issue. The children participants also brought up the idea that monitoring and external control can help prevent the dangers of social networking apps.

Zilka’s conclusion on the safety of younger generations on social networking apps resulted in a negative outcome. According to Zilka’s research(2018) results, many participants experienced “shaming among members of their group”(pg.188), Zilka advises that in order to prevent the negative outcome we must make an effort in resolving this issue. In other words, Zilka believes that a possible way in preventing shaming would be to bring awareness to this problem. I completely agree that we should make an effort in solving this problem, and just like the participants in Zilka’s research suggested that monitoring and having external control of the children on SNA can prevent this negative outcome. Therefore my view in solving this problem is by having authoritative figures such as parents and schools should start monitoring the kid’s activities on social media to prevent any dangers to the kids well being.

Having both parents and schools monitor the younger children who are in middle school and elementary school will definitely help prevent any future dangers such as shaming/bullying which can lead up to mental health issues. However at this point, I would like to raise some objections that have been inspired by the skeptic in me, I have to admit that I have used social media for about 4-5 years now and I haven’t experienced any bullying or dangers and there are people my age who also have not experienced any dangers. Nevertheless, I believe that social media equally has its benefits and dangers. I started using social media when I was in 9th grade and by then I was a bit more mature and responsible for most things. However, younger children who are in elementary and middle school can be oblivious to dangers and many younger kids might say that monitoring their social media will cause an invasion of privacy. According to Zilka’s data, only 2% of the participants allow their parents to view their social media. I agree that monitoring can be an invasion of privacy but there are already companies who monitor people on social media to gain insight into what people like and dislike. It is considered the “norm” for these companies to surveil the people on social media apps. There is also research in which monitoring students resulted in a positive outcome. Therefore by having parents and schools monitor the children’s social networking activities, it would have a positive impact just as Byers’s research results about monitoring.

The article named “Monitoring social media and technology use to prevent youth suicide and school violence” by Jason Byers, Emily Graybill, Quynh Wellons, and Lonny Harper. The authors described in detail about a school district experience in a social media monitoring program that prevents both youth suicide and school violence. In the first few paragraphs, the authors mention that many have access to technology and most of the teens spend a vast amount of time on the internet to play games, “hang out” with friends, and look at different apps. They emphasize the point that younger people have access to the internet and essentially spend most of their time on it. The authors say that social media has created a platform in which individuals perpetrate acts of violence against each other, which can cause damaging psychological effects on school-aged minors.

The study that the authors describe was taken in the Southeastern United States, study involved public school districts, and it involved a total of 17 schools. The school district made sure to receive the parents’ consent in order to let both the children and parents know what study they are participating in. Out of the 17 schools, 11 were elementary, 4 middle, and 2 high schools. The results they received were mostly targeted towards the younger kids rather than high school teens. The results of monitoring were positive, they were able to prevent any suicides and provide the students who raised a red flag with counseling.

The authors from the article above state that the “district was successful in disrupting suicidal ideations of several students and ultimately saved their lives.” In making this statement the authors emphasize the point that monitoring students ultimately created a big positive impact on preventing suicides and assisted in making sure of their wellbeing. This is a very important breakthrough in how we as a society can prevent any dangers to the younger generations well being. I think that if more school districts can start monitoring their students’ activities on social media I believe there will be a promising footprint for the future of the younger generations well being. The authors of this article also mentioned that the study was costly, if we can involve the government into funding a social networking monitoring program then more schools around the country will be able to monitor their students and provide counseling to those who raise a red flag.

Younger generations including millennials and generation Z should become aware of the many dangers on social media, this includes bullying, invasion of privacy, pedophiles, and threatening content. The dangers of social media can potentially cause “psychological effects” (Zilka) and harm their happiness/health. By involving authoritative figures such as school staff and parents will absolutely make a great positive impact, with monitoring we can make sure students’ mental health is safe and make sure there aren’t any bullies or stalkers lurking around the younger generations social media. Although  there will always be various kids and young adults who will disagree with the idea of being monitored by their parents, let alone their school staff. There are already social media companies who monitor your social media activity and utilize the information for their benefit. Isn’t that invasive? We know that as children and adolescents grow up they learn to be more responsible and aware of these situations but it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to a person’s well-being.

Diagnostic essay

I have lived in New York City my entire life, for 18 years and 1 month to be exact. I enjoy living in New York City. The city is filled with many interesting people and many exciting opportunities. New York City is my home and I plan to stay in NYC for a while. The city is the only place I want to stay because all my friends and most of my family reside in NYC. I have known many people who have also grown up in the city and learn to despise it as well as feel trapped in the city. I realize that NYC has its flaws however this City is one of the best cities to exist. Joan Didion said she “was in love with the city”(pg.228) and I absolutely agree with her. I love living in New York City and I can’t imagine living somewhere else. I want to speak about my experiences in New York City, whether good or bad as well as proclaim why New York City is the best city to live in.

I grew up in uptown Manhattan in a small apartment on 151st Street. We lived in a one-bedroom apartment with an average-sized living room and a kitchen. We resided in a mostly Hispanic and Latino community because the apartments were affordable and we felt more comfortable living with our people. Also living in apartments located in downtown manhattan is a bit expensive for my family. Growing up in a small apartment was difficult but not a problem. In my community, the police department would close down certain blocks during the summer and many kids would just go outside and enjoy themselves. We would also go to Central Park to play in the grass and go to the Museum of Natural History as well as go to Toys R Us just to see the toys and the indoor ferris wheel. New York City was a great place to grow up. When I was a kid I always thought that my family was financially stable and that money was not a problem. There was one specific quote that Meghan Daum said which was “Although I never had the sense that we were poor, I now realize that we must have, at a certain time anyway, come pretty close to it.” I relate and agree to this quote because as soon as I learned about how New York City is an expensive place to live in, I realized that my parents must have struggled with their bills and financial problems. This was eye-opening and I learned that many other people must have also struggled to live in New York City but still manage to live a decent life.

It is a fact that New York City is one of the most expensive places to live in. However, all the opportunities and future experiences that this city has to offer are definitely worth the money. New York City offers a lot of things such as parks, museums, schools, universities, job opportunities, small shops, hospitals, etc. I can’t imagine living in any other place other than NYC. My cousins live in New Jersey and I usually visit them during the summer. They live in a townhouse in a rural part of New Jersey. Their house is pretty big and they have plenty of space to play outside. Most places like shops, schools, and grocery stores are at least 10-15 minutes away by car. This part of New Jersey is only accessible by car. Yes, there are some busses but there is at least an hour’s wait. I can’t stand living in such a spread out area where it takes at least 25 minutes just to get a bacon egg and cheese, while in New York you can walk downstairs to the corner deli, order your sandwich and get back home in less than 10 minutes. Life in New York City is much more efficient. Transportations such as buses, taxis, and subways are much more accessible, while in New Jersey a car is the most efficient transportation. I enjoy taking public transportation and you never know what you may find in a subway car.

The best part about  New York City is Central Park. Central Park is a gigantic plot of land that sits right in the middle of Manhattan. I have been to Central park plenty of times and it never gets old. There is also an ice rink located on 110th and Lenox. Imagine skating in an outdoor rink surrounded by a pond and huge trees. I have been going to this ice rink for about 9 years and it’s almost like a second home to me. There was one time when I was younger where my mom, sister, and two brothers were walking in Central Park heading towards the rink, my mom was carrying my sisters bag while my brothers and I carried our own bags. Hockey bags are pretty heavy and I was only a young child who wasn’t strong but still managed to carry my bag. As we were heading towards the rink I tripped on a rock and fell face-first on the concrete floor. All of a sudden people around me started helping me up and asked if I was ok. They offered to carry my bag to the entrance of the rink and honestly that was one of the nicest things a person can do. People from New York City are genuinely nice and that is one of the reasons I love New York City because of the people.

People in New York City come from different backgrounds and different heritages. I believe New York City is a pretty diverse city. In the city, there are many communities where many people of different races reside. For example, in uptown manhattan such as Harlem and Washington heights, many colored people reside there. Another example is Korea town and Chinatown. Also, there are many parades and festivals that happen in the city that serve to acknowledge different heritage and backgrounds. For example the Chinese Lunar New Year Parade, Saint Patrick’s Day, Persian Parade, Cinco de Mayo Parade, National Puerto Rican Day Parade, and much more. These celebrations bring people together. New York offers these different kinds of experiences for the people.

The subway in New York is not only the most efficient way of transportation but also one of the places where you can find the most interesting people. There was one time where I was in a subway cart heading to Coney Island. I was on my phone playing mobile games, as we reached a stop a man came in and sat in the seat in front of me. The man pulled out a small animal that looked like a puppy but when I looked closer it was a hamster. The people around me were looking at the man and just staring at each other in confusion. This is a normal occurrence where many people bring random animals, furniture, and other random things in the subway. The New York City subway is an interesting place to meet interesting people. Many performers who dance on the subway as well as singers. I love the people in New York City.

I enjoy living in New York City and the many opportunities, experiences, and the people. However, I have had a few instances where some people are really rude and ignorant. Like every other city, there are some people who attack other people verbally and physically because of their skin color, job, living situation, and much more. I have personally had some experiences with those kinds of people. An experience I encountered with some rude people was when I was playing a hockey game in Central Park against another team. My team is made up of a mixture of races such as Hispanics, Muslims, Black, and White players. While the other team was mostly made up of White players. Throughout the game, the other team would laugh at us whenever we fell or made a mistake and they would start to say things such as “you suck” and “get off the ice.” Those people were being really rude throughout the game and my team was furious and angry but we kept our composure because we know better than to attack the other team. There will always be ignorant and rude people in the world and sometimes you just have to ignore them and move on. This isn’t just a problem in New York City but instead it’s a problem around the world.

I have lived in New York City for 18 years and I love this city. New York City is my home and I don’t think I will ever leave the city. There are many places to go with your friends and enjoy all the things the city has to offer. I might have a biassed opinion on New York City since I have lived in the city my entire life and I have been dependent on my parents and have yet to experience renting an apartment. I must admit that I am still a teenager who doesn’t have to worry much about paying debt, medical bills, rent, health insurance, etc. I am very fortunate to have a supporting family. However, New York City can still be affordable and this city is honestly the most astonishing of all cities. You can go downtown to find all the superstructures that reach up to the clouds and the broadway musicals and then head midtown to find Central Park and then head upper manhattan to visit all the communities and rich culture.

My goal is to inform you that New York City can bring upon many experiences and opportunities and it’s not as bad of a city as most outsiders say it is. My perspective on the city is of someone who has lived in uptown Manhattan for the past 18 years. When it came to college I had the opportunity to leave New York City but I chose to stay in the city because I know that I will become homesick and I will miss all the bacon egg and cheese as well as miss my subway interactions with different people, as well as miss playing with my hockey team. New York City is my home and I love living here.
